This morning, while mowing the lawn, picking weeds, and vacuuming the pool, I had a vision. A quick double-check online, some equipment in the car, and one hour later... No, I was not at Mont Saint Sauveur for the water park. I was there to ski! Yes, that's right, on this 18th of May, the ski season at Mont Saint Sauveur is still alive, offering die-hard skiers one last chance to hit the slopes before the inevitable arrival of summer. They were supposed to close for the season last weekend, but given this long weekend's exceptional weather and their still significant snow base, they are open once again for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The trail selection, given the ti…

This morning, I packed these items in my bag. I wasn't going to the beach, however. My destination on this beautiful March April 12th was Mont Garceau and their annual pond crossing event, obviously! Upon seeing the weather today, it was an easy decision to make. A perfectly blue sky, the warm spring sun, unbelievable coverage, and a plethora of events combined to make a fantastic day. Upon my arrival at 8:15, the sky was still overcast, but the temperature was already a promising +1. Despite their posted opening hour of 8:30, the hill didn't open until well after 9:00 because of ongoing grooming operations. This was no problem, however: spring is the only time …

Today, before heading back to the city, I spent the morning skiing at Mont Blanc. Upon my arrival at around 8:30, and it was very quiet. Many factors could have caused this: a Sunday is generally not as busy as a Saturday, the time change means this 8:30 was actually 7:30 in old time, and the temperature was a chilly -19. The morning was very enjoyable, however, because less people means less waiting and better skiing, and despite the cold weather, being outside was very bearable due to the lack of wind and dampness, and the warm sunshine. I started skiing on the Mont Blanc side, the side where the main parking lot and large chalet is, along with most of the hill's ser…

Last week, when looking at the weather forecast, it was impossible not to go skiing. Clear blue skies, the warm March sunshine, and a daytime high of 0°C: what more could you ask for? I decided to visit Mont Garceau, situated in the Lanaudière region in the town of Saint-Donat. I usually visit this ski hill once every year or two, and I like to come in March for a few reasons. This mountain, being the highest in the surrounding area, is very exposed to high winds, and, as a result, can be very windy (and therefore even colder!) in the cold winter months. I also like to benefit from the glades and natural snow trails, which naturally offer the best coverage after a winter …

Today, I when I left home to go skiing, I had three intentions: to teach a friend to ski, to revisit a ski hill to which I haven’t been in many years, and to enjoy a day on the slopes close to home. Where did I go? Mont Rigaud, of course! Situated in the small town of Rigaud, about an hour from downtown Montreal and 30 minutes from home, Mont Rigaud bills themselves as the “Ski Nursery of Quebec”. Upon arriving and seeing their infrastructure, it would be hard to argue with this claim. They offer a 400-foot vertical drop, nine gently sloped yet still interesting trails for most levels, three user-friendly lifts, a modern chalet offering all ski services, and impeccable sn…

Despite the chilly -23°C this morning, I visited my home hill of Mont Blanc today for some skiing. Mont Blanc, located in Saint-Faustin-Lac-Carré, Quebec, is about 15 minutes south of Tremblant and 75 minutes north of Montreal. Offering a theoretical 1000 vertical feet, they bill themselves as Quebec’s most family-friendly ski resort, and offer all the services one would expect of a ski center. They also offer a hotel, slopeside condominiums, a pool, a spa, bar, and a large jungle gym for children. Notably, Mont Blanc completely renovated their cafeteria, in both the food service area and the seating area. Replacing the outdated 1980s-style setup, the cafeteria now offers…
